Boomer Bardo Mission
The Boomer Bardo Mission: To provide some comic relief and be a Force for Good (loved those comic books!). Also to help interested Boomers Build Community and stop increasingly-demanding daily responsibilities just for a brief moment – in order to be Energized today by their youthful Idealism. And to bring that Idealism forward into the 21st Century in order to leave an enduring legacy for future generations. And to Boldly Go – As Far As We Can!
Hello, my name is [anonymous] and I am a Boomer! LOL
I am also a former stand-up comedian and all around smart-ass. I like making jokes and making people laugh. That is the light-hearted side of Boomer Bardo.
The serious side of Boomer Bardo is about encouraging and supporting Boomers in remembering their youthful Ideals and the youthful energy of those Ideals. And with the wisdom from a lifetime of experiences – bring those Ideals into the Present and activate them. Creating a kind of a Mid-Life Youth Experience
In the office where I work, I am entry-level and also the oldest person in the building by 20+ years. I have experienced Age-ism in hiring and also many preconceptions about Age from the young people working with me. Which have slowly been overcome – but it was a challenge.
I noticed that many Millenials and Gen Xers seemed to take it for granted (!) that Baby Boomers were a ‘washed up’ bunch of crabby oldsters who had totally failed in implementing their youthful Idealism. And that the only thing ‘hip’ about Boomers was possibly our newest hip placement (never had to have one, knock on wood!)
I was taken aback. And then shocked. And then really, truly horrified. And then – really irritated.
And it Dawned on me: What these youngsters lack – is Perspective. They have no way of knowing what things were like before Boomers began having an impact on our society. And therefore, they literally don’t know what a profound and lasting effect Boomers have made. And will continue to make as we go forward. [See "You Can Thank a Boomer For..."]
I DON’T feel ‘old’ and I am still hip, thank you very much. Just because (most of us) grew up, stopped protesting various causes in the street, had families and responsibly raised them for the past 20+ years – does not mean we have ‘vanished.’ We are still here and still Keepin’ on Truckin’. Just doing our Responsible duties as Good Citizens.
This does NOT mean Boomers are stupid. Or without Ideals. We are mostly just really, really busy at this stage of our lives. As a group, Most Boomers are quietly fulfilling responsibilities and helping family and friends. We have kids in (or nearing) college, kids out of college and without work, parents needing help or assisted-living (and you thought college was expensive!). Some of us are raising grand-children and/or helping under-employed adult children with their expenses, helping family members and friends who may be unemployed (or under-employed) now. And some of us (bless their energy!) are even opting to start new families. While still helping aging parents and adult children, in many cases.
As a group in many ways – Boomers are just plain tired. But not ‘old’ and certainly not un-hip. Boomers rock and always will.
So Boomers: How about if we manifest in the Present – some of the most positive Boomer Ideals? Let’s Build Community, network and info-share. Let’s begin to talk about (and effectively deal with) Age-ism in hiring wherever it exists. We’re now Experienced and have a lifetime of accumulated wisdom to apply to this issue. Let’s effectively learn to use Technology for the Forces of Good and Networking. (Some of us are still not internet-savvy). And let’s have fun! And have some laughs along the way.
Because as everyone knows: A Laugh a Day does a body good.
